THE BEAUTY OF A PAINTED SURFACE IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP

“One and Done”, is a favorite saying of construction workers relating to the importance of taking one’s time, doing the necessary research, selecting the proper material and applying it in a manner that will not require a ‘re-do’. Cracked, bubbling, and peeling paint may result from a failure to appraise the surface condition and select an adequate bonding primer resulting in the dreaded “re-do”.
A common mistake when undertaking a paint chore or project is to jump straight to the final coat without doing the necessary surface preparation, adhesion research and color consideration.
Another old saying is that “caulk, putty and paint, make a carpenter what he ain’t”. This speaks to the importance of surface preparation and the significant difference it makes in the final product.
After all else is accomplished the color and sheen are merely a mirror to reflect the quality of the completed project.

Painting at local events

We love to participate in local events and the start of the season is finally here. We will be painting and sharing fun and laughs at lots of events on Sanibel and in Ft Myers this year.
Our first event will be the Sanibel Luminary, tomorrow. Friday, December 4th, shops all over the island have food, drinks, fun and lots of lights for everyone. We here at John Grey Painting will be at the Village Shops 2340 Periwinkle Way. It's going to be a great time, and Santa will be there too, so bring all the kids as well.
We are going to be painting the Art Of The Olympians space at the City Pier downtown historic distric beginning Monday....google this for more info...newspress has several stories last week...this is a big deal downtown so it should also be LOADS of fun.

Faux 4-Sanibel, Ft Myers, Bonita & Naples

I have so many ideas of faux finishes I would like to put in my home, but until recently I didn't know where to turn to find someone I could trust to do it for me. I have dabbled a little myself, as most of us house wives have, but it just never looks as good as what I want. I looked through Ft Myers, Bonita & Naples and found quite a few down in Naples, but not much anywhere else. Then I found John Grey. It never crossed my mind to look for faux in Sanibel.
I am so happy with their work at John Grey. They have fixed some construction issues I had, installed my crown molding, painted basic interior and exterior, and then made my faux dreams come to life. All of the painters and artists at John Grey were great. I will definitely pass on to all my friends who they should go to. Thank you John Grey Painting!

Prepairing you Home Decor for Hurricanes

Summer has come and gone and if you didn't already prepare your home decor for hurricanes, it might be time. While there always is the possibility of a hurricane, each year there is the certain inevitability of wind driven tropical rains.

Now is the time to make an inspection around the exterior envelope of your building or dwelling. A good starting place is to look for any open cracks or open seams, especially around windows, doors, and in wall spaces above roof areas.

It is important to investigate symptomatic discoloration, peeling, or soft and deteriorated wood to identify any area which might allow water intrusion. Inspect the gutters and downspouts to insure that water is being properly diverted and carried away from your structure. Overhanging vegetation, close plantings and other objects which deflect water onto walls should be removed or reworked.

Water intrusion and chronic moisture conditions in or around a home may contribute to unhealthy indoor air quality, mold growth, and even rotting conditions requiring expensive repair. So stitch up those open seams.

A good way to reduce the amount of effort and the guess work involved with water intrusion risk control is to enroll in an annual inspection and assessment program. The best annual programs include spot repair of any failed caulking or small openings in a building’s exterior envelope. They also provide a written assessment of the findings of each yearly inspection (identifying areas of concern which should be monitored in the future). These home decor preparations will lessen damage and cost of high wind and rain issues when it comes time to refurbish.

MAINTAINING OLD T1-11 SIDING

T1-11 wooden siding is found on the exterior of many homes in Southwest Florida. The configuration of this surface includes a lot of grooves which may have holes and cracks and can let water in. This surface requires a more diligent maintenance regimen than many other building materials. As we all know, wood is prone to attack from microbes which need moisture to live. Preventing moisture intrusion will help insure theintegrity of the siding. The intrusion of water and the presence of microbes will severely shorten the life span of your siding.

Regular cleaning and inspection to identify problem areas before they cause failure of the exterior envelope is a must to protect your home and your investment.
Timely repair and recoating should include the following steps.

1) You should be certain that any failed coating (paint), dirt and/or mildew is first removed by pressure cleaning with a mild chlorine solution (loose or damaged boards should be addressed at this point) and then apply an appropriate primer coat to seal and prepare the wood for paint.

2) Next there are several options regarding caulking, filling, and use of high build coatings to correct problems of checked and cracked surface areas to consider and select from.

3) Painting with two solid coats of a premium grade satin acrylic house paint and engaging in a yearly maintenance cleaning and inspection program should enable you to extend the life of the T1-11 (or any surface) indefinitely, with repainting typically on a six to eight year schedule.
